The Ultimate Guide for British Couples Getting Married in Italy (Updated January 2024)

Food, landscapes, cultural heritage, sunglasses, and Aperol spritzes. Maybe a ride in a Fiat 500 cabrio?

Or perhaps rocky seashores, a luxurious spa, you, your partner and your wedding guests sipping Prosecco and Limoncello as your wedding celebration unfolds, with a piano playing in the background and a breathtaking view over the Sicilian coastline.

Wow. Okay, let's start from the beginning.

If you're here reading this, you must have your own fantasy about Italy and weddings. And for very good reasons.

But where do you begin?

The list seems endless - documents, planning, traveling, choosing venues, and coordinating with vendors and suppliers. It might appear daunting, but remember, many have successfully navigated this path before, and you are certainly capable of doing the same.

So, here's a step-by-step guide to getting married in Italy as a British couple.

We'll cover everything from the necessary documents to ceremonies, costs, and wedding venues, complete with insider tips from experienced wedding planners who specialize in crafting unforgettable Italian weddings.

So grab a cappuccino, sit back, and let's dive into this ultimate guide together.

1. Legal requirements for British couples getting married in Italy

Questions we will answer in this section:

  • Can a UK citizen get married in Italy?
  • Can you legally get married in Italy?
  • Can you get married in Italy if you are not a resident?
  • Do I need to register my marriage in the UK if I got married abroad?
  • Documents Required

Let's start by addressing the elephant in the room: which documents do you need to get married in Italy as a British Citizen?

The answer might surprise you. It's important to remember that civil ceremonies are the only legally recognized form of marriage in both Italy and the UK. If you wish to have a religious or symbolic ceremony, it must be performed after the civil ceremony.

Also, give yourself at least 8-10 months to navigate all the legal bureaucracy and paperwork.

The different options for wedding ceremonies are:

  • Civil Ceremony
  • Religious Ceremony
  • Symbolic Ceremony

So, let's start by listing the pros and cons of these different options.

CIVIL CEREMONY

To legally marry in Italy as a British couple, you'll need to obtain a Nulla Osta, which is a Certificate of No Impediment. This document, issued by the British authorities, confirms that there are no legal obstacles to your marriage. You'll also need a sworn affidavit, translated into Italian, stating your eligibility to marry.

Additional required documentation includes passports, birth certificates, and proof of residency. Note that requirements may vary by region, so consulting a wedding planner or local authorities is advisable to ensure you have all necessary documents.

For a more detailed explanation of this process, we have a dedicated blog post.

It delves into the necessary steps to obtain these documents and offers tips and tricks to make the process smoother.

RELIGIOUS CEREMONY

Catholic weddings in Italy are possible for British Nationals but require thorough preparation. This involves several documents and authorisations from the couple’s local priest and Bishops, and typically requires 9-12 months of preparation. We can assist you by guiding you through the complex procedure of a Catholic Wedding in Italy and by suggesting venues where the Bishop will have no objections to your wedding.

OUR FAVOURITE: SYMBOLIC CEREMONY

Luckily, there's a third option that is a lifesaver for many couples: a symbolic ceremony.

This type of ceremony, which may or may not be religious, is not legally valid, but it plays out just like a genuine marriage service.

The best part is that it's written specifically for you, making it highly personal.

So, how does this work?

The first step is to have a civil ceremony in the UK, where dealing with the paperwork through your local council is easier. Italy is well-known for two things: amazing food and not the most efficient bureaucracy (wink wink 😉).

In our experience, a symbolic ceremony is often the best choice.

The freedom to craft your ceremony as you envisioned, without the constraints of civil and religious ceremonies, can significantly reduce stress. The main advantage is that you can hold the ceremony anywhere you can imagine. The sky's the limit. Italy boasts historic churches, charming chapels, and picturesque outdoor settings that provide stunning backdrops for your ceremony.

Whether it's a historical landmark, inside a vineyard, on the beach, under the shade of a beautiful wood, or on the green slopes of Mt. Etna (ohhh that's a good one, looking for a couple bold enough to do it!).

One of our favourites was on the steps of a Greek temple
(here some pictures).

The ceremony is the heart of any wedding, and planning one in Italy offers a unique opportunity to incorporate Italian traditions into your special day (like having a granita and gelato cart for a refreshing treat after the ceremony).

Next, think about the order of events and any special rituals or traditions you want to include. The exchange of rings and vows is crucial, and you might also consider additional rituals like a unity candle ceremony or the tying of the knot.

We particularly love the "Sand Ritual", where each audience member is given a small container of sand. They make a wish for the couple and then pour their sand into a larger container, symbolising their support and wishes for the couple’s journey. Family members and the couple also participate, creating a powerful symbol of combined support and commitment.

This is your chance to be creative, and if you're ever short of ideas, we have a secret list of beautiful concepts we'd love to share!

Lastly, consider the music and readings for your ceremony. Choose meaningful readings or poems that reflect your love and commitment.

The ceremony is a deeply personal and meaningful part of your wedding day. Plan it with care and attention to detail, ensuring it reflects your unique love story and creates a memorable experience for you and your guests. Don't hesitate to ask your wedding planner, friends, and relatives for ideas and inspiration – they'll be more than happy to help!

Now that the ceremony is taken care of, let's move onto another super important step: choosing your perfect wedding venue.

2. Choosing the perfect wedding venue in Italy

One of the most exciting parts of planning a wedding in Italy is selecting the perfect venue. From historic castles and rustic farmhouses to luxurious villas and seaside resorts, the options are truly endless.

Here are some factors to consider when choosing the ideal wedding venue in Italy.

  • Consider the location. Italy is a diverse country, and each region offers a unique charm and atmosphere. Do you dream of a romantic wedding in the rolling hills of Tuscany or a glamorous affair on the Sicilian Coast? Think about the type of scenery and ambiance that resonates with your vision for the wedding day.

  • Convey this information to your trusted wedding planner: they'll be able to show you all the venues that match your description. Bear in mind, in Italy many venues are not well marketed, and you might not find them online. That's why it's always good to have a local wedding planner do the scouting for you.

  • Consider the size and capacity of the venue: are you planning an intimate gathering with just close family and friends, or do you envision a grand celebration with a large guest list? Make sure the venue can accommodate your desired number of guests comfortably.

  • Research style and character of the venue: Italy is home to a wide range of architectural styles, from medieval castles to Renaissance palaces, rustic vineyards, historical sites, natural wonders and modern villas. Think about the aesthetic that aligns with your vision and find a venue that embodies that style.

  • Plan accordingly to the amenities and services offered by the venue: Do they provide in-house catering, or do you have the freedom to bring in your own caterer? Are there on-site accommodations for you and your guests? These details can make a significant difference in the overall convenience and experience of your wedding day.

  • Lastly, don't forget about the budget. While Italy offers a plethora of stunning venues, it's important to consider the cost implications. Research and compare different venues to find one that fits within your budget without compromising on quality and ambiance.

Once you have considered these factors, you can start narrowing down your options and visiting potential venues in person or virtually. Take your time, ask plenty of questions, and trust your instincts. The perfect venue is out there waiting to bring your wedding dreams to life.

3. Italian wedding traditions and customs

Italy is a country steeped in tradition and customs, and incorporating these elements into your wedding day can add a touch of authenticity and cultural significance. From the pre-wedding rituals to the reception festivities, here are some Italian wedding traditions to consider for your special day.

  • La Serenata: one popular Italian tradition is the "La Serenata," where the groom surprises the bride with a serenade on the night before the wedding. Accompanied by a guitarist or a small band, the groom sings love songs to his bride, often outside her window or at her doorstep. This romantic gesture symbolizes the groom's love and devotion to his future wife.

  • I Confetti: Another cherished Italian wedding tradition is the "Confetti." These are not the traditional paper confetti but rather small, sugar-coated almonds. The confetti are typically presented to guests as a symbol of good luck, fertility, and prosperity. They are often packaged in elegant favour boxes or sachets and are a sweet way to thank your guests for attending your wedding.

  • La torta nuziale: Additionally, the cutting of the wedding cake holds special significance in Italian weddings. The cake, known as "Millefoglie," is typically a multi-layered pastry filled with cream or custard and topped with fresh fruit. The cutting of the cake is a symbolic gesture that represents the couple's first task together as husband and wife. It is also customary for the bride and groom to feed each other a bite of the cake as a sign of their commitment and shared future.

  • La Tarantella: no Italian wedding would be complete without dancing the traditional Italian wedding dance, the "Tarantella." This lively and energetic dance involves couples holding hands and spinning around in a circle. It is a joyful celebration of love and unity and is sure to get all your guests on their feet.

  • Il taglio della cravatta: And how could we forget the 'cutting of the tie' tradition? In this playful ritual, the groom walks around the room with a hat while guests cut a piece of his tie in exchange for a monetary gift.

Incorporating these traditions into your wedding day can add a touch of Italian charm and create a memorable experience for you and your guests. Whether you choose to embrace one or all of these customs, they are sure to infuse your wedding with love, joy, and a sense of cultural heritage.

4. Budgeting and financial considerations for a destination wedding in Italy

Planning a destination wedding in Italy can be an exciting and romantic endeavour, but it's important to consider the financial implications and budget accordingly. Here are some key factors to consider when budgeting for your Italian wedding.

  • Determine your overall wedding budget. Consider how much you are willing and able to spend on your wedding day, including travel, accommodation, and local services. Be realistic about your budget and prioritise the aspects of your wedding that are most important to you. Want a ballpark estimate? For a wedding of 70 guests, consider a minimum of  £35k, for a wedding of 100 consider a minimum of £40k. The limit upwards, of course is however much you want to spend!

  • Consider the cost of travel and accommodation for both you and your guests. Researching flight costs and accommodation options is crucial for your budget planning. Typically, the months of September and October, just after the summer, offer the best combination of lower prices and an amazing climate, characterised by warm days and beautiful evenings. Decide whether you will cover these expenses for your guests or if they will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs. Generally, the couple is not expected to pay for flights or accommodations, but sometimes, especially for smaller weddings, they might choose to cover a part of the expenses, such as a celebratory meal or drinks the night before or after the wedding. Ultimately, this decision depends on your budget and the size of your wedding.

  • When selecting a Wedding Venue, it's crucial to consider the cost implications. Some venues might charge higher rental fees due to their location or the amenities they offer, while others may provide package deals that include catering and additional services. In certain cases, it might be more economical to rent a venue separately and then choose your own catering options, potentially leading to greater savings. Therefore, enlist the help of your wedding planner to gather all the necessary details about the wedding venues and their packages. They are well-equipped to assist in this process. Take your time to compare different venues and their pricing structures. This will help you find a venue that fits within your budget while still maintaining the desired quality and ambiance.

  • Consider hiring local vendors. Italy offers a wide range of talented professionals, and their services may come at a better price compared to vendors in your home country. Research and compare different vendors, request quotes, and factor their fees into your budget. Don't forget to include additional costs such as meals for the vendors on your wedding day.

  • It's also important to consider any additional costs that may arise during the planning process. These can include legal fees, translation services, permits, and licenses, as well as any unexpected expenses that may arise. It's advisable to set aside a contingency fund to account for these unforeseen costs and ensure that you have some flexibility in your budget (a wedding planner will help you with that and to minimise the costs too).

5. Finding the right vendors for your Italian wedding

Planning a wedding in a foreign country can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to finding the right vendors to bring your vision to life. From photographers and florists to caterers and musicians, selecting the right team of professionals is essential to ensure a seamless and unforgettable wedding day. Here are some tips for finding the right vendors for your Italian wedding.

  • First and foremost, do your research. Take the time to explore different vendors and their portfolios, read reviews and testimonials, and compare prices and packages. Wedding planning websites, social media platforms, and online directories can be valuable resources for finding reputable vendors in Italy.

  • Next, consider the benefits of working with a local wedding planner. A planner who specialises in Italian weddings can be an invaluable resource in connecting you with the right vendors. One significant advantage of partnering with a wedding planner is their ability to secure discounts ranging from 10-20% from each vendor, which might not be available if couples approach vendors directly. Wedding planners have established relationships with trusted professionals in the industry, enabling them to recommend vendors that perfectly align with your vision and budget. Beyond just vendor selection, they also manage the logistical aspects of coordinating with these vendors, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience on your wedding day.

  • When evaluating potential vendors, schedule meetings or video calls to get a sense of their personality, professionalism, and communication style. It's important to find vendors who not only have the necessary skills and experience but also understand your vision and can bring it to life. Trust and good chemistry with your vendors are crucial for a successful collaboration.

  • Ask for references or client testimonials to get a sense of the vendor's track record and client satisfaction. A reputable vendor will be more than happy to provide you with references or share examples of their previous work. This will give you peace of mind knowing that you are working with professionals who have a proven track record of delivering exceptional results.

  • Lastly, be clear about your expectations, budget, and timeline with your chosen vendors. Open and honest communication is key to ensuring that everyone is on the same page and working towards a common goal. Discuss any specific requirements or preferences you have, and don't be afraid to ask questions or seek clarification on any aspects of their services or pricing.

Remember, finding the right vendors is an essential part of planning your Italian wedding. Take your time, do your due diligence, and trust your instincts. With the right team by your side, your wedding day will be a seamless and unforgettable experience.
